Most organisations are already in the cloud whether they know it or not as there is an increasing trend of business units procuring cloud solutions before engaging with IT.
A study conducted in 2016 by IDG on Cloud Computing showed that 70% of organisations have at least one application in the cloud and 62% are leveraging private cloud solutions.
This week’s announcement from Microsoft that two additional data centres for Azure have been made available in Canberra will see an increase in those figures as a result of the investment that Microsoft are making in Australia.
The additional data centres will provide hyper-scale cloud services that meet the stringent security framework Government entities and their partners are required to adhere to, thus enabling a new wave of organisations to undertake the cloud transformation journey and introduce capabilities to their business that weren’t previously available.
With all the excitement and momentum in the market around public cloud it’s important not to dive straight in without undertaking due diligence. Far too often businesses focus heavily on the implementation phase and skimp on the planning and preparation phase, the results can be detrimental to the business as opposed to providing the business with a strong sustainable platform for growth, innovation and transformation.
So how do you know if the cloud is for you? What parts of the business can you move to the cloud? Are you moving to the cloud because your business needs to or because you have been told to? Before embarking on the journey, there are considerations that need to be taken into account to ensure the first venture into the cloud paves the way for a greater transformational journey
- Why are you moving to the cloud?
- What business outcomes are you trying to achieve?
- Have you fully assessed your business (People, Process and Technology)?
- Do you have a blueprint?
- Does your human capital have the skills to perform the migration and keep your environment optimised?
These are only a handful of a broader set of considerations that need to be addressed before starting the migration journey. For an in-depth check list please download our Cloud Migration Checklist.
